Purpose and justification of the indicator

The aging of the population is a recent demographic phenomenon, as the increase in the proportion of old people in the population appeared in a more pronounced form only in the twentieth century. The high birth rate at the beginning of the 20th century, the decrease in mortality and thus the increase in life expectancy have led to an increase in the absolute number and share of the population over 64 years of age in most of the current countries of the European Union. Since the 1960s, mortality has fallen most after the age of 60, reversing the mortality trend of the last two centuries. This has resulted in a dramatic increase in the proportion of the population over 75 years of age.

The demographic trend in Slovenia does not differ from the demographic trend in developed countries. The population of Slovenia has been among the elderly for more than a decade. Developed countries are already facing the negative consequences of an aging population, as there is a global increase in the number of limb injuries, inflammatory and degenerative joint diseases, and spine diseases and injuries. In the future, we can expect that the problem of injuries, especially due to falls, will
increased due to the increase in the proportion of old people in the population, which leads to an increase in the need for long-term care or home care and the resulting increase in costs in the health care system.
