Mortality
Purpose and justification of the indicator

Mortality is an indirect indicator of the general good or bad state of health in society. Data on deaths reflect the number, distribution and structure of the most serious diseases among the population. They are used to assess the state of health, efficiently distribute material and human resources within the health sector, plan prevention, health care and evaluate activities.

Definition of indicator

The overall mortality rate describes the mortality, regardless of the cause of death, in the entire population per 100,000 inhabitants in an observed calendar year.

An age-standardized rate is calculated, which enables mutual comparison of populations with different age structures.

Unlike the standard calculation of mortality by usual place of residence, for the purpose of display in Health in the municipalities, the municipality of the last permanent residence is taken into account. If there is no permanent residence in the official records, the last temporary residence is taken into account.

Unit of measure

Rate per 100,000 inhabitants.

Calculation of the indicator

The standardized death rate is the ratio between the number of deaths in the observed calendar year and the number of all inhabitants in the middle of the same year, multiplied by 100,000.

The direct standardization method is used to calculate the age-standardized rate, where the Slovenian population from 2014 is used as the standard population.

The publications show the average of several consecutive years.

Notes

The deceased are classified by municipality according to their last place of permanent residence. If there is no permanent residence, they are classified by temporary residence. This is to a large extent correcting the impact on mortality by municipality that the registration of temporary residence in the period before death at the temporary address of the Home for the Elderly in another municipality has.

In the 2016, 2017 and 2018 releases, mortality is shown by usual residence and is not comparable with later releases.
